Globalisation
Making Globalisation intelligible to media practitioners. Twenty-two years ago, LPG meant Liquefied Petroleum Gas and GDR meant German Democratic Republic. The early Nineties saw the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. The Dunkel Draft was the new buzzword—with a small section vociferously supporting it and a multitude of voices opposing it. In its wake came new meanings for old acronyms – LPG now means Liberalisation, Privatisation and Globalisation and GDR is the abbreviation for Global Depository Receipts. The changes were rapid, and they continue. There were few resources accessible for journalists to make sense of these major shifts in the policy framework and its impact on our livelihoods. WTO Ministerials rouse such widespread interest because the decisions taken there are likely to have far-reaching economic and social consequences for all 149 member nations. At the same time, the issues discussed, the rules governing negotiations, and implications of decision are shrouded in legal and technical terms that often frustrate not just interested citizens but even media personnel. Recognising the fact that the communication bridge between the negotiations and the interested public is the media, Panos South Asia is making attempts to prepare background material that transcends the legal and technical jargon and yet provides a basis for comprehending and communicating to the public about the WTO process of evolving a multilateral trade regime as intelligible as possible.
